Fitness Friday – Alternative Exercise

The sun is coming up and it looks like it’s going to be a beautiful spring day here in Saint Paul. Nice weather gives us the opportunity not just to go outside, but to think outside in terms of exercise. Why stick to the same old boring modes of exercise when you can do things like go surfing (not here, of course, but I know quite a few of my readers live in warm ocean locales).

If you’re stuck in a land-locked location, you’ll have to make do with other alternative activities, but they can be (almost) just as much fun as surfing. Think about what you love to do outdoors now, or what you loved to do as a kid. Combining nature, play and exercise is the best way to get in your 20 minutes of activity each day. There are probably dozens of options, but here are a few suggestions to get you started.

Play catch with a friend
Play “frisbee golf” – you don’t need a course, just a big park with a few trees you can use as targets
Play tag with your kids (or your adult friends)
Go for a hike
Ride your bike just to feel the sun on your face and the wind in your hair (or bike helmet, which would be safer)
Play horseshoes
Play a round of real golf (carry or pull your clubs)
Play touch football (do be sure to warm up first)
Take your sweetie out for dinner and walk there and back
Play with your kids on playground equipment – and actually climb up the ladders, slide down the slides, try the monkey bars and swing (assuming equipment sturdiness allow it)
Hold a hula-hoop contest on your lawn or in the park
