“Healing is a matter of time, but it is sometimes also a matter of opportunity.” – Hippocrates
Each day we make ourselves either more or less healthy; we move toward or away from our ideal state of fitness. We each have a picture in our minds of what “health” looks like, and some list of attributes that describe a healthy body, but what we sometimes forget is how important our physical health is to our overall state of being. It’s central to our happiness, our productivity and our ability to contribute to the common good. If we lack energy, strength, stamina or other physical ability, we limit what we are able to do in all aspects of life. We each live with the physical constraints that heredity, habit and circumstance have given us, yet we each still have our own unique iteration of ideal health. Striving for this ideal – working daily toward achieving the best physical condition we are capable of – is a crucial pillar in the foundation of each of our lives.
This doesn’t mean, of course, that we should hold ourselves up against some imagined ideal. The picture of health that society has painted is an unrealistic and corrupted mirage – it does not exist for anyone, and, in fact it does not represent true health. Rather, we should each try to be as healthy as we can be, caring for our bodies as best we can.
True health is not only about getting a few more years out of life, but it’s also about working to ensure that the years we have left are of the highest quality possible. Remaining independent to the extent that we are able, helping others in greater physical need, and serving as mentors and role models for those we have influence over are all responsibilities that we should take to heart.
