I’m finally back to blogging after a much-too-long hiatus. For the past six weeks, I’d been renovating our new home with my wife, then moving in, all while finishing the manuscript for my weight loss book. Well, we are all settled into our lovely new home and I turned in my manuscript to my editor at Turner Publishing yesterday. Whew! It’s so good to be back here – I’ve missed writing these posts.
Although it’s Friday, and I usually do a fitness-related post on Fridays, the timing of this post begs for something different. I don’t want to freak anyone out, but next week is the last full week before Thanksgiving – which makes it the perfect week for the Rainbow Challenge!
For those of you who haven’t heard of it, the Rainbow Challenge is something I invented a few years ago when I was just starting my blog at MNFitnessBlogger.com (the predecessor to this blog). Here’s how it works:
1. This weekend, spend some time at a grocery store in your area that has a great produce section. Load up your shopping cart with fruits and vegetables from all the colors of the rainbow. If you have kids or grandkids, they’ll love helping you with this.
2. Beginning on Monday, for one full week your goal is to eat at least one serving of a fruit or vegetable from each color of the rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, blue/purple.
3. A serving of fruit is 1/2 cup or one small apple, orange, banana, etc. A serving of vegetables is 3/4 cup for everything except avocado (1/4 of a small avocado, which is actually a fruit, but let’s not get into that) and leafy greens (2 cups).
4. There is a scoring system which makes this a game – fun! You get one point for each color from the rainbow you eat each day. You get one bonus point for each day that you eat a blue AND a purple serving (in addition to all other colors). You get one bonus point for each day that you get at least 3 of your servings from vegetables. You have to subtract one point for each serving that is prepared in a less-than-healthy way (beer battered green beans, deep-fried poppers, I could go on.)
Here’s how the point tally breaks out:
10 – 14 points for the week = Winner!
15 – 20 points for the week = Champion!
21 + points for the week = Leprechaun (you’ve obviously found the gold at the end of the rainbow!)
You can use either the color on the inside of the food (such as green for kiwi or orange for mango) or the outside of the food (such as purple for eggplant, yellow for banana, etc.). You can score more than one point for each color per day as long as you have eaten one serving from all other colors of the rainbow for that day.
